The Ronald McDonald House is a "home-away-from-home," a temporary lodging facility where families of children with cancer, leukemia and other serious illnesses reside while children are treated at nearby hospitals. The House provides emotional support to parents and siblings of sick children who also benefit by knowing that family is close by. For families traveling great distances to receive specialized medical care the House eliminates costly hotel bills, while providing a secure place to stay -- a place where additional strength and stability are received for other resident families in similar situations.
The Ronald McDonald House in San Diego opened on December 16, 1980 adjacent to Children's Hospital and Health Center. The House was started by a small group of parents who know, first-hand, what it is like to have a child with cancer. Since opening its doors, the twelve bedroom house has helped more than 5,000 families in need of lodging.
The House asks a donation of $10 the first night and $7 every night thereafter per family to use the facilities. Unfortunately, due to medical expenses, financial responsibilities of supporting their families at home and in many cases the parents may have to temporarily leave their job to be with a child at the hospital, these families are unable to give any type of a donation. In any case, families are never turned away due to financial circumstances. All money donated to the House is used to support the day-to-day operations and maintenance of keeping the doors open at the House.
The San Diego Chapter of the American Payroll Association has been involved with the San Diego House for many years. We support the House in its continuing effort to help families in need by sponsoring dinners, donation drives, and individual events to the House as needed. Please join us in our endeavor by joining us at dinner or contributing to a future drive. Contact CeCe Bramlett at 619-920-8525 for any questions or suggestions on this great philanthropy.
